Apocalypse Rising 2 is set on a remote island chain consisting of major and minor islets. Excluding the minor islands, as well as a few specific points of interest, the landscape is relatively uniform from island to island with a handful of terrain types. A large majority of the map varies between tropical forests and towns with a Hawaiian architectural style and color pallet, and areas with a more temperate climate with farms and crop fields. The map currently consists of three major islands (Barkley, Faris, and Halsey) and three minor islands (Albatross, Lulu, and Mackinaw). The map of Apocalypse Rising 2 has undergone many additions and modifications since its original release, with gameplay changing drastically upon each new iteration.

Layout and Design[]

In general, the landscape consists of blocky, polygonal terrain that gradually changes in elevation, with the occasional steep cliff side. Structures exist throughout the map, with more clustered at marked towns and Locations. The architectural design of most buildings throughout the map is relatively uniform (either a tropical or more Midwest theme) throughout the map with the exception of the minor islands having their own unique building themes.

The landscape can be mainly divided into 4 main terrains: plains, farms, forests, and the coastline. Additionally, a majority of the map is ocean, but it currently remains nearly featureless (exceptions include the Oil Rig, Helicopter Crashes, a few tiny islands who all have a chance to spawn Pirate Crashes or boats, and featureless rocks and sand banks sticking out of the ocean).

Plains (pale green) are generally flat and have intermittent trees and boulders, but also long stretches of open space. Farm fields (yellow, olive green) are also flat, but are abundant with hay bales or other features such as barns, homes, sheds, and fencing. Forests (dark green) are thick with trees and tend to have more concentrated elevation variation compared to open plains. The coastline (also yellow) is often bare of any structures, natural or otherwise, and its elevation tends to remain consistent, excluding cliffs. It has occasional sandbars here and there.

Some terrain exceptions include more developed areas, namely the Naval Air Station and Regional Airport, which feature long, flat stretches of pavement and are abundant with structures. Additionally, Mackinaw Island and the Volcano each have very unique terrain. Mackinaw Island is largely tropical (more so than most other places on the map, including the coastline) and the Volcano is ashen, bare, and composed of solid granite and volcanic rock.

The map has a system of roads and bridges that can be traversed on foot or by car. Boat travel is also an alternative for crossing between islands. Due to the size of the map, aircraft have been teased as a possible feature under consideration.

Locations[]

The map is home to a number of towns and other points of interests (both marked and unmarked). More "formally" marked locations are printed on the map and written in a neat, computerized white font. The more "informal" locations are written in a sloppy, blue handwriting (assumed to have been marked in by your character, a survivor fortunate enough to be well-acquainted with the map).

Barkley Island[]

Barkley Island is the largest, yet most sparse of the three main islands. Its colloquial name of "Volcano Island" was given to it in honor of its most distinctive and recognizable feature, the large volcanic crater in its center.

Faris Island[]

Faris Island is the smallest of the main three islands. It was also the first island added to the game, albeit having undergone extensive changes since the game's alpha launch. It connects to Barkley and Halsey Island by road.

Unmarked Locations

Halsey Island[]

Halsey Island is nearly as large as Barkley Island but has significantly more location density. It contains the only inland body of water on the map and is covered in the largest area of farmland and homes. Along with this, Halsey Island is often considered to have the most important wins on the map (at least in terms of loot and size) and often considered the central hub of activity by the player base. It connects to Barkley and Faris Island by road.

Albatross Island[]

Albatross Island, given the colloquial name of "Prison Island" because of the area of prison which has almost taken the whole island. It is the smallest of the minor islands but has a conveniently dense amount of loot per area in comparison to other locations. Albatross island has three random event spawns; 2 Smuggler planes on both of the islands, as well as a pirate event that spawns the pirate which drops the "Broadside" Lupara. There is also a boat in spawn that has police gear and will drop guns such as M14s, Model 788, Model 788 Carbines, M16A2, and XM177s, essentially being police weapon spawns. The third island it has is housing the Prison, which is a correctional facility with police gear, as well as 3 Special forces crates, 2 Special weapons drop, and a power plant.

Marked Locations

Lulu Island[]

Lulu Island, historically nicknamed the "Monastery Island", is one of the three minor islands on the map. It does not connect to another island by road.

Mackinaw Island[]

Mackinaw Island nicknamed "Smugglers Island", "Mines Island" or "Katana Island"; is the largest of the three minor islands. It has a drastically different setting and landscape than the rest of the map, with sparse tropical flora, dilapidated shanty structures, and hot springs strung about the island. It does not connect to any other island by road and has a small ravine cutting through it, with only a few bridges and low points to cross it.

The Ocean

The ocean spans more area than any one island, expanding past the map display. Aside from very small islands with little to no features, the ocean is composed solely of water.

The ocean has 1 marked location.
